Create shorthand

Type less and reuse phrases you say often.

SylphSpeak does not have a single “Shorthand” settings page. Instead, you create shorthand with pronunciation rules or soundboard items, then trigger frequently used phrases from the soundboard, a bubble, or a keybind.

If you want to…Use
Type a short abbreviation in the input bar and have SylphSpeak say a longer phrasePronunciation
Reuse a full phrase with a slash command like /niceSoundboard
Tap a phrase interactively without typingSoundboard cards, or a bubble
Trigger a phrase from the keyboardA bubble keybind for that soundboard item

Use pronunciation when you want to type short text and hear a longer spoken result.

  1. Open Config mode > Speech Rules.
  2. Under Pronunciation, add a rule.
  3. Put the short text you will type in Match.
  4. Put the full spoken phrase in Spoken result.
  5. Save, then type the short text in the input bar and send.

Example: type brb and SylphSpeak says “Be right back.”

See Change pronunciation for the full steps.

Use a soundboard item when you want a saved phrase you can trigger with a slash command.

  1. Open Config mode > Soundboard.
  2. Create a soundboard item and enter the phrase in Actual phrase output.
  3. Add a slash command trigger, such as /nice.
  4. In the input bar, type the slash command and send.

SylphSpeak speaks the saved phrase output as if you typed the full line.

See Add and use a soundboard item for the full steps.

Access frequently used phrases interactively

Section titled “Access frequently used phrases interactively”

After you create a soundboard item, you can trigger it without retyping the full phrase:

  • Soundboard cards — open Config mode > Soundboard and select the item card.
  • Bubbles — create a bubble for the soundboard item, add it to a loadout, then select the bubble next to the input bar.
  • Bubble keybinds — after the bubble is in the active loadout, use its keybind to fire the phrase from the keyboard.
  • Prefer pronunciation for abbreviations and short typed shortcuts that expand as you send normal text.
  • Prefer soundboard for reusable callouts, greetings, and set phrases you want as a slash command or one-tap control.
  • Prefer a bubble (and optional keybind) when you want interactive access next to the input bar.

Create one pronunciation shorthand or one soundboard slash command for a phrase you use often. If you want one-tap access, create a bubble for that soundboard item and add it to your active loadout.
