Sign language

Sign language on stream means the creator communicates in a sign language, such as American Sign Language (ASL) or British Sign Language (BSL), on camera or through their avatar. A sign language is a complete language, not a set of gestures.

Part of Communication methods.

How it works

Some creators sign on a hand camera beside their avatar. Others use tracking to bring their hands onto the model, often with captions for viewers who don’t sign.

  • Input: Signing, captured by a camera or a hand tracker.
  • Processing: The creator’s real hands appear on a hand camera, or tracking software maps the signing onto the avatar.
  • Delivery: Signed language, often alongside captions or on-screen text for viewers who don’t sign.

Viewers who sign get direct communication in their own language. For everyone else, captions or text carry the message.

What it isn’t

ASL, for example, has its own grammar, uses both the hands and the face, and is a different language from BSL (NIDCD). There is no universal sign language. Each one is its own language. Sign language also isn’t the same as gestures and expressions, which add meaning to what the avatar does.

Before you stream with it

Watch a recording back, ideally with someone who signs. Fast movement, fingerspelling and facial grammar are where avatar tracking tends to slip, and a hand camera keeps every handshape visible.

Questions

Can you use sign language as a VTuber?
Yes. A creator can sign on a hand camera next to the avatar, or use tracking to bring the signing onto the model.
Is there a universal sign language?
No. American Sign Language and British Sign Language, for example, are different languages.
Can avatar tracking capture sign language?
Not reliably yet. Webcam hand tracking is still imperfect, and VTube Studio calls its own feature experimental. Fingerspelling depends on clear handshapes, and the face carries grammar too, such as raised eyebrows for a question. A hand camera or captions can help.
How do viewers who don’t sign follow along?
Through captions or on-screen text shown alongside the signing.
