On-screen text
On-screen text puts the creator’s words on screen for viewers to read.
Part of Communication methods.
How it works
The words might appear in a chat bubble beside the avatar, in a text panel or as captions on the broadcast. No voice is needed at all. Some creators use it as their everyday way of talking, others for certain streams.
- Input: Typed messages.
- Processing: Display software shows the text. A basic version can be as simple as an OBS text source that reads from a file.
- Delivery: Written words on screen, as part of the broadcast.
Viewers read the stream as well as watch it. Wording, punctuation and timing all become part of the creator’s style. The text needs to be large enough, and on screen long enough, to read on a phone.
What it isn’t
Chat text also uses typed words, but it lives in the platform’s chat, while on-screen text is part of the broadcast and shows up in VODs and clips. Typed TTS turns typed words into a synthetic voice, and on-screen text doesn’t need one. A stream that shows or reads out viewers’ messages is carrying the audience’s words, not the creator’s.
Before you stream with it
Test the text on a phone-sized screen. It should be large enough, stay clear of anything important, and stay up long enough to read. Partners in a call may not see your overlay, so agree on where they’ll read your messages.
Questions
- How do VTubers show text on screen?
- Usually with a chat bubble beside the avatar or a text panel. A basic setup can be an OBS text source that reads from a file.
- Is on-screen text the same as chat text?
- No. On-screen text is part of the broadcast and appears in VODs and clips. Chat text lives in the platform’s chat unless the creator captures it.
- Is on-screen text the same as typed TTS?
- No. Typed TTS turns typing into a synthetic voice. On-screen text is the typed words themselves, with no voice required.
- Do creators who use on-screen text switch to TTS later?
- Not necessarily. Text can be a creator’s settled way to communicate live, and a text-led stream never has to become a TTS stream.
