Chat text
Chat text means the creator replies by typing directly into the stream’s chat or a Discord channel, with no synthetic voice and no on-screen overlay.
Part of Communication methods.
How it works
Viewers read the creator’s messages alongside their own.
- Input: Typing into the platform’s chat (Twitch, YouTube, Discord).
- Processing: None beyond the platform. Messages may be highlighted or badged as the broadcaster’s.
- Delivery: Text in the chat window.
The conversation happens in the same space viewers type in. People watching full screen or on a TV, or catching a clip or edited upload, may not see it unless the chat is shown on stream.
What it isn’t
On-screen text is placed on the stream itself, so it shows up in VODs and clips. Chat text stays in the platform’s chat unless the creator captures it. Viewer messages fill the same window, but chat text is the creator’s own replies.
Before you stream with it
Decide where collaborators will read you, and consider a chat overlay so clips and edited uploads keep your replies.
Questions
- Can you stream by only typing in chat?
- Yes. Some creators reply entirely in the stream’s chat, with no voice and no overlay.
- What’s the difference between chat text and on-screen text?
- On-screen text is part of the broadcast and shows up in VODs and clips. Chat text lives in the platform’s chat unless the creator captures it.
- Will viewers see chat replies in VODs and clips?
- Sometimes. YouTube stream archives and saved Twitch VODs can replay chat beside the video, but clips, edited uploads and embedded players usually don’t. To keep replies in every version, show chat on stream.
- Can chat text work in a Discord collab?
- Yes. A creator can reply in a Discord text channel during a call. Agree with your partners on where they’ll read your messages.
