Speech-to-text-to-speech

Speech-to-text-to-speech, often shortened to STT→TTS, STTTS or STTS, starts with the creator speaking. Software transcribes the words, and a synthetic voice reads the transcript.

Part of Communication methods.

How it works

  • Input: Spoken words into a microphone that isn’t sent to the stream.
  • Processing: Speech recognition turns the speech into text (W3C WAI), then a speech engine voices that text.
  • Delivery: Synthetic speech, sometimes with captions.

Viewers hear the new voice instead of the microphone, as long as the audio is routed that way. Replies come out spoken, without any typing, along with the occasional misheard word that the voice reads out anyway. Some creators turn those slips into running jokes.

What it isn’t

Typed TTS ends in the same kind of voice but starts with typing, so a synthetic voice alone doesn’t tell you how the words went in. Voice conversion also starts with speech, but it works from the speech itself, without a transcript for a voice to read.

Before you stream with it

Check which audio reaches the stream. Processing your voice doesn’t automatically remove a microphone that’s captured separately, so take the raw mic out of your broadcast and listen back to a test recording. Try the names and game terms you say most.

Questions

What does STTS mean?
STTS stands for speech-to-text-to-speech. The creator speaks, software transcribes the words, and a synthetic voice reads them aloud.
Is speech-to-text-to-speech the same as a voice changer?
No. A voice changer transforms the sound of your speech. Speech-to-text-to-speech turns your speech into text first, then a synthetic voice reads that text.
Why does STTS sometimes say the wrong word?
Speech recognition has to guess what you said before the voice reads it. Names, slang, game terms and fast speech are the usual misses.
Do you need to speak to use STTS?
Yes. It starts with spoken input. To communicate without speaking, typed TTS, on-screen text or chat text work from typing instead.
